1) Make a List of Positions

Write down the titles for the work people are doing right now. Inside that document, describe:

  1. The purpose of the role
  2. Connections to others inside the company
  3. Responsibilities
  4. KPIs
  5. Skills
  6. Commitment

This will create a virtual workflow method. Using this method, create an organizational chart.

2) Add New Positions

Add any new positions. Create new ones that will fill gaps in moving work forward. 

3) Use an Organizational Chart

Divide the chart into 3 or more columns. Then list the job titles for three types of people – ones who drive, ones who are accountable and those that report.

4) Fill Names

Now, fill the names in the empty boxes of the chart. These are names of people currently doing the roles in the chart.

5) Decide on Changes

Decide if you need to change people in these roles. You could find out that developing the chart opened new area for people.

6) Reassign Chart

Now, interview people to find out if they fit the roles in the chart. If they do, assign them to the right roles. If they don’t, figure out how to include them in new roles that adds value to the organization.

7) Set Up Agreements

Develop non-compete or non-disclosure agreements as necessary. You may need to also develop agreements for contractors.
